Powell Store Restoration Home - Powell Store Restoration

The Powell store was a beautiful General Store in its hay day, supplying the local residents of the Greenville community for many years. The store was abandoned in the 80's until the United Methodist Church of Greenville and Norton Hill purchased the store a few years ago with the idea of turning it into a thrift shop.
A Building Restoration Task Force was formed from Church volunteers in 2007 and they have been steadily working on restoring the structure. Restoration to date includes demolition, cleaning and repairs to the inside basic structure, a new roof has been added, and new electrical services, plumbing, and heating have been installed. The insulation has been installed, drywall, tape, painting, floors refinished, bath installed. It near completion and the store plans to open on March 2nd.
The completion of the building’s restoration will enable the Church’s current Thrift Shop to move into the building and expand its services to the community. The Thrift Shop, established in 1989, supports many outreach and mission activities supporting both Greene and Albany Counties. These activities include supplying clothes for multiple shelters in both counties, collecting food items and funds for the local food pantries, supporting local migrant workers, supporting multiple local hospital outreach activities to families, supplying scholarships for the Church’s Day Care Center, supporting local high school and college students in their mission projects, and supporting many special projects sponsored by the Cancer Society and the Battered Women's Program.

The Building Restoration Task Force has a volunteer-based work day every month. The next work days are scheduled for FEb 5th (floor painting) and Feb 19th and 26th for installing the kitchen and other trim projects.

The Thrift Shop volunteers always prepare a nice warm lunch for the workers so we can rest and socialize before returning to work in the afternoon.

Volunteers and donations accepted.
